Improving safety and productivity at loading docks with modern equipment

A large proportion of the occupational accidents recorded occur in areas where goods are received or shipped, including loading docks. However, the consequences of these incidents can be very costly for companies, in particular because of compensation for victims, repair of any damaged equipment, deteriorated products, delay in execution and the cessation of production. Fortunately, more than half of all accidents can be prevented by taking the right measures. Below you will find modern equipment designed to optimise safety in a loading dock.

Vehicle restraint systems

The detachment of trailers during operations within a loading dock can be the cause of a catastrophic accident endangering the lives of many people and resulting in significant material damage. Today, there are automatic devices that are used to lock the wheels of trailers to prevent them from slipping during operations. Unlike the chocks that have to be removed manually, they are operated from a control box inside the building.

Loading dock levellers

Levellers act as a bridge between the inside of the loading dock and the trailer bed. There are currently hydraulic models that can be operated automatically via a simple push button. Also, they are strong enough to support the weight of loaded forklifts that pass through them several times during the course of a day. Finally, it is recommended to opt for a leveller that allows for a smooth transition to protect drivers of material handling vehicles from major impacts that can lead to spinal injuries or other health problems.

Interlock controls

Some companies even choose to install interlocking controls to optimize security during operations. These can be programmed so that the leveller only lowers when the area is secured. They then follow the following steps:

  • Vehicle Restraint Systems Engagement
  • Opening the door
  • Retracting the safety barrier
  • Lowering the leveller

Communication fires

Connected to motion detectors inside and outside the loading docks, the communication lights emit light and sound signals of different colours when:

  • A semi-trailer backs up in the area.
  • Handling equipment or dock workers are inside the trailer.
  • The vehicle restraint systems have not yet been activated.

Smart software and equipment

The use of intelligent software and equipment makes it possible to collect key data regarding loading docks, including equipment, productivity and safety. This information is then reviewed to determine the appropriate corrective strategies to improve the efficiency and timeliness of activities.

Conclusion

At first glance, the adoption of modern loading dock safety equipment seems like a huge investment. Nevertheless, you will see the profitability of the project when you see the significant reduction in costs related to workplace accidents.
